Safety

Once we have made our manoeuvre we need to check our road position, check in the mirror for following traffic and then we can make progress into the new road.

Whatever the manoeuvre we must always be aware of any pedestrians in the area of the road we are going to use, we will have to anticipate whether they intend to step into the road and give way to them if necessary.

We must be careful not to rush the approach - particularly when turning right. Rushing can lead to turning too early and will result in corner cutting - as we have learnt in earlier lessons this can be very dangerous and if you cut corners when emerging at crossroads and the traffic on the main road is moving quickly it could have dire consequences.

Summary

Dealing safely with crossroads will probably seem complicated at first – don't worry, you will already be familiar with many of the problems that can be encountered when you learnt about emerging at T junctions.

There is the additional factor of traffic emerging from the opposing road but if you make sure that your speed is suitable so that you have plenty of time to make effective observations and then assess the situation carefully before making any decision you should soon be dealing with crossroads confidently.

The principles that you learnt about when emerging at T junctions are just as important here

Do Not Allow The Front Of The Vehicle To Cross The Give Way Lines Until You Are Absolutely Sure It Is Safe

And always remember - Don't Know Means – Don't Go
